This is Not Your Mother's Menopause!

Bioidentical Hormones - Your Body Can Tell The Difference!

The latest buzz in the menopause world is bioidentical hormone therapy. This is NOT a new concept but as millions of women are entering the transition time of menopause more interest is being given to a natural way of replenishing hormones. The Women’s Health Initiative study scared the hormones right out of some women; now they are feeling negative effects and decreased quality of life without hormone support. The frustration is mounting over this and the search is on for assistance through the maze of information and misinformation regarding this controversial topic.

The molecular structure of hormones is what makes them either synthetic or bioidentical. There are significant differences. It is this structure that is the key. Bioidentical hormones (BHRT) are functionally and molecularly the same as those produced in the human body. The active ingredients used are FDA approved.

All estrogens are not alike. BHRT is an option for those who are interested in a more natural approach to relieving menopausal symptoms and preventing osteoporosis.

The body’s hormone balance is complex; correcting imbalance should be done scientifically. Lab testing helps determine which hormones are needed. A combination of these can be custom made for each woman. The “cookie cutter” approach, giving every woman a predetermined amount, without consideration of specific needs, is not in her best interest.

It is important to find someone who will spend the time to discover the patient’s individual needs and desires. Therapy is always prescribed by a nurse practitioner or doctor and is prepared by licensed compounding pharmacists.

It takes time and patience to get things “just right”. Individualized doses are achieved through evaluating lab tests and adjusting the amounts based on symptoms.

Prices vary depending on the strength of each hormone, how many hormones are combined into the chosen dosage form. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA can all be combined in one or divided up as the person prefers or needs.

The goals are to use the most appropriate dosage to relieve symptoms, to create balance and to promote an excellent quality of life. Personal and family histories are considered as well as risk factors. Physical exams and close monitoring of the patient is necessary. It is a focused regimen that gives optimum health benefits of hormone replacement therapy.
